Hope federal cash grant will help ease life for older gays

summary:  GAY rights activists hope a federal government grant of almost $400,000 for aged-care training will help decrease the stigma, discrimination and exclusion facing the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
text 1:  The gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender health organisation ACON and the Aged and Community Services Association of New South Wales and the ACT will combine to develop the training package.
text 2:  It was reported in April that a lack of services, awareness and funding for gay seniors meant many older gays were going back into the closet or increasingly becoming scared about their options for aged care.

Australia’s first female Prime Minister opposed to same-sex marriage

summary:  Julia Gillard will become Australia's first female prime minister after Kevin Rudd decided not to take part in a leadership ballot this morning.

Australia lags shamefully on gay marriage

summary:  Gillard's "no" to equal rights for same-sex couples is bewildering.
text 1:  What reason could Julia Gillard possibly have for personally opposing same-sex marriages? As Labor leader she can claim to be upholding party policy, even though the ALP in her home state of Victoria has voted overwhelmingly to end that policy. But as a "personal" stance, her opposition to gay people marrying is inexplicable.
text 2:  She is an atheist, so it can't be because she believes God ordained marriage as a holy sacrament and condemns homosexuality as a sin.

Voices of the 'other' that need to be heard

summary:  HOBSONS Bay deputy mayor Tony Briffa is thought to be the only person to describe his sex as ''other'' in the Victorian Local Governance Association survey of the numbers of males and females in local government.

Christian Brethren sued for barring camp to gay group

summary:  THE youth support group said it wanted to help gay youth tackle homophobia.
text 1:  The way the Christian Brethren understood it, allowing the promotion of a homosexual lifestyle at a campsite they owned was against the word of God.
text 2:  Cobaw Community Health Service is seeking compensation from Christian Youth Camps Ltd, claiming its decision to refuse members of its Way Out project to camp at a Phillip Island resort in 2007 discriminated against the young people based on their sexual orientation.

Tax-time equality for gay couples

summary:  As they lodge tax returns for the financial year just passed, Australians in same-sex relationships are for the first time able to claim entitlements once restricted to opposite-sex de factos and married couples.
text 1:  The tax changes are among almost 100 laws passed by the Federal Government in 2008 in a bid to remove discrimination for same-sex couples.

Super change for same-sex state services

summary:  Same-sex partners of deceased Victorian police and emergency services staff will be able to receive their partner’s pension benefits under changes to superannuation law.
text 1:  The Superannuation Legislation Amendment Bill was voted in by the Legislative Assembly on June 22.
text 2:  t amends existing law to entitle same-sex partners of judges, police officers and emergency services personnel who are employees of the state to equal treatment of their super with regard to their same-sex partners, specifically with regard to reversionary pensions.

ADOPTION BATTLE UNDERWAY

GAY SAUNA STAFFER BASHED

summary:  The gay community has been warned to stay alert after a staff member from Collingwood gay sauna Wet on Wellington was bashed in a vicious robbery.
text 1:  Wet on Wellington manager Shane Gardner told Southern Star the staff member, who wishes to remain anonymous, left the premises on Sunday, July 4 at around 9.30pm and was walking along Peel St, towards Smith St, when he was set upon by at least three men wielding baseball bats.

VIC POLICE TARGET GAY RECRUITS

'Who is in your family?' Resource Kit

summary:  A resource kit for early childhood services, primary schools and the rainbow families who use them. Produced by the Rainbow Families Council, 2010.

SEAHORSE CELEBRATES 35 YEARS

DEDICATED HIV DOCTOR FAREWELLED

Looking for a good (free) book?

summary:  In March, a forum hosted by Yarra City Council to bring together members of the GLBTIQ community – including businesses and community groups – came up with a few suggestions for making Yarra a more inclusive place to be for queers.
text 1:  One suggestion at that meeting was that there be an audit of all the queer fiction, non-fiction and DVDs available through the Yarra Libraries network, which includes public libraries in Carlton, Collingwood, Fitzroy, North Fitzroy and Richmond.

summary:  NEITHER partner wore white, and everyone concerned carefully distanced themselves from the words ''wedding'' or ''marriage''

AFL welcome is not about 'coming out'

summary:  A guide to GLBTI inclusive practice for health and human services
text 1:  Launched by the Hon the Hon Daniel Andrews MP, Minister for Health on the 3 December 2009, the GLBTI MAC, has developed Well proud to assist the Department of Health, the Department of Human Services and funded agencies improve the quality of care provided to their GLBTI clients.

AFL players to say no to homophobia

summary:  headspace has joined forces with the AFL Players Association (AFLPA) to say no to homophobia.
text 1:  headspace today launched an online video campaign to highlight the fact that positive messages about inclusion and diversity, delivered by high profile members of the community, can have a positive impact on mental health.
text 2:  Featuring the words of North Melbourne player Drew Petrie and Hawthorn Premiership player Brad Sewell, the video shows previously-released images of past and present AFL players and coaches holding signs voicing their views on homophobia.
