LGBTIQA+ Peer Support Service

Person holding mobile phone

Talk to us, we’re here to listen

Speak to a peer LGBTIQA+phone worker by calling 1800 184 527 or chat online between 3pm and 12 midnight every day of the week.

This service is for LGBTIQA+ identifying people and those who have questions or concerns about LGBTIQA+ issues. We also welcome contact from people who may not be LGBTIQA+ but who want to talk about someone else they care about. This includes families, friends, teachers and co workers of LGBTIQA+ people.

You are invited to explore any issue including referrals, community connections, thoughts and feelings around sexual orientation and/or gender identity. All conversations are confidential, anonymous and non-judgmental. Please note that clinical intervention, therapy and case management are outside the scope of Switchboard’s services.

Please call 000 if you are in an immediate crisis.

What is peer support?

Peer support is based on the principle of support between peers with a shared lived experience.

Switchboard peer supporters are trained volunteers who identify as being a part of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer and Asexual communities. Our volunteers are committed to working within a framework of respect and anonymity. We don’t claim to be experts, but we do have shared understandings of what it means to be discriminated against because of our sexuality and or gender identity. We aim to be intersectional, feminist and anti – oppressive (strengths based) in our work, to meet people where they are at. We aim to listen, to connect and understand and offer information and referral, if appropriate.

Help! My call isn't going through.

Our service is open from 3pm to midnight every day.

If you are calling between these times and your call isn’t being picked up, please do keep trying until you can get through.
If you are waiting a long time in the chat queue, keep your window open until a counsellor is free to chat with you. Sometimes it can take a while to get through to us.
