Once in a Lullaby: A Portrait of Australian Rainbow Families is a new book by Melbourne artist Mia Mala McDonald who photographed rainbow families from the east coast of the country and captured personal stories of what it means to be a family.
View an installation of Mia’s photography in the Pauline Gandel Children’s Quarter over the two weeks of Midsumma Festival.
You’ll also have a chance to continue Mia’s project and add your own image to the display!

Midsumma Storytime
If you love a story, you’ve come to the right place! To celebrate the upcoming Midsumma Festival, State Library Victoria is adding rainbow flair to their regularly programmed Storytime.
Join every Monday and Wednesday in late January as LGBTQIA+ authors, performers and community members share their favourite stories – and join in to sing some rainbow-themed songs and rhymes.
The special guests who will be taking over regular Storytime sessions as part of Midsumma include:
Dancer-choreographer Raina Peterson on Monday 22 January, 10.30 - 11.00am
Oral storyteller Em Chandler on Wednesday 24 January, 10.30 - 11.00am
Writer Jasper Peach on Monday 29 January, 10.30 - 11.00am
Drag artist Dandrogyny on Wednesday 31 January, 10.30 - 11.00am
Perfect for kids aged 0-8. All Storytime sessions will be Auslan interpreted.

Midsumma Rainbow Dance Party
Get ready to groove and twirl at the most fabulous Midsumma kids dance party!
State Library Victoria is transforming their Pauline Gandel Children’s Quarter into a rainbow disco where kids aged 12 and under can come dressed in their brightest rainbow attire and dance the afternoon away with DJ Alice Glenn from No Lights No Lycra.
Every dancing diva needs a dazzling prop, so before you get out on the dance floor, craft your own rainbow streamer wrist twirler to match your moves.
