External Event - World AIDS Day Memorial

Thorne Harbour Health, Living Positive Victoria, the Melbourne AIDS Quilt Project, in conjunction with Positive Women Victoria

About World AIDS Day:

World AIDS Day is an international day of awareness, giving the public and organisations the opportunity to show their support for people affected by HIV/AIDS. Annually, on the 1st of December, the world comes together to mark World AIDS Day. This momentous occasion serves as a worldwide platform for uniting against HIV, displaying support for individuals living with HIV, and remembering those lost to this virus. It's worth mentioning that World AIDS Day, established in 1988, heralded the beginning of global health observance days.

Thorne Harbour Health, Living Positive Victoria, the Melbourne AIDS Quilt Project, in conjunction with Positive Women Victoria, are once again collaborating to host the annual World AIDS Day Memorial.

This year's theme is Remember and Commit.

Together, everyone will acknowledge the legacy of Fairfield Hospital, a cornerstone in Melbourne’s early HIV/AIDS response and honour those who have died whilst reflecting on Fairfield’s pivotal role in providing compassionate care and groundbreaking medical interventions during the height of the epidemic.

Everyone will look to the future of HIV care at the newly established Fairfield Centre at The Alfred Hospital, symbolising ongoing commitment to world-class HIV support and treatment. Along with Luke Gallagher as the MC,

Key speakers include:

  • Former Fairfield Hospital Nurse, Judy Frecker

  • Fairfield patient, David Menadue

  • Nurse Manager of the new Fairfield Centre, Kirsty Owen

Performances by:

  • Celebrated Australian singer and actress, Debra Byrne, performing Warm Blanket of Love

  • Acclaimed pianist, David Cheshire

  • Australia's longest-running LGBTIQ+ choir, the Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus
